In Austria, the 2-G rule is now in effect. Those who are neither vaccinated nor recovered can no longer go to pubs, hairdressers or events.
Visiting hospitals and nursing homes is also no longer possible. Guests who break the rules face administrative fines of up to 500 euros, and operators up to 3,600 euros.

This level of penalties is also provided for employees and employers in the case of the 3-G rule in the workplace. There, it is the employer’s responsibility to carry out regular checks. The health authorities also carry out random checks.
The high infection figures must be responded to “jointly and in a manner worthy of a society based on solidarity,” Austrian Interior Minister Karl Nehammer said, referring to the 2-G rule. This now means clarity and security for people, he said. The government did not make the decision easily, but in the spirit of a society based on solidarity, the measure now seems necessary, Nehammer said.
“The police have now been massively challenged, also burdened, by the coronavirus for many months,” the interior minister said. At the same time, he said, it has been essential to support the health authorities during these months. “We will continue to do so,” Nehammer noted, stressing, “We will significantly increase the control pressure in the coming days.”
In addition to 4,000 police officers on patrol, 800 police officers will be involved in the control activities of the 2-G rule implementation. “They will do these checks prudently,” Nehammer said. He issued a warning: Falsifying the green passport is a serious, criminal offense – forgery, he said.
The penalties for failing to comply with the 2-G rule are also severe, Nehammer said. “We have a collective obligation to ensure that intensive care bed capacity in Austria is not overstretched.”
Around 500 forged certificates found so far
In practice, police checks should proceed as follows, Ruf said: first, the 2-G certificate is checked, then a comparison is made with a photo ID. So far, around 500 forged certificates have been found during such checks. From now on, Ruf emphasized, the checks will be “consistent. How often? That is still being discussed.
